Thanks stomper.
The ferry would be my absolutely last resort. I would try a giant catapult before embarking the diesel stinking ferry across the Irish sea in the middle of winter. Grim memories of doing that trip as a child.

Airlines want to see a passport/photo ID even if the border officials are prepared to be relaxed. But yes, in theory we are supposed to have a relaxed common travel agreement with Eire.
I can't face the ferry.
Looks like it's doable, based on Stewey's advice and also the lovely chap who linked the ID card thingy. Looks like Easyjet would be ok with it even if poxy Ryanair aren't.
I am much more relaxed about it now, just waiting to hear if/when I need to drop everything and get over there.

I think you can still go to Peterborough and it'll be done that day if you get there at opening time. I went a year or so back and whilst boring it worked.
It's expensive I remember but if needs must.
Hey - hope all works out good for you every which way :-)
best wishes, Yarmouth

I've seen on the movies it's quite easy to make your own passport with some thick card, cling film and a sharp knife. Ten minutes tops.

Matron
This may seem a tad radical, but bear with me.
Get a domestic flight to Cardiff. As the plane approaches its destination, calmly walk into the cockpit, with laptop in hand. Tell the pilot to read the work of one "Nurse Ratched" on WestHamOnline. When he's had time to inwardly digest it, inform him that YOU are that poster, and that the plane will be continuing on across the Irish Sea.
He'll be too scared to argue otherwise.
Repeat same when passing through immigration at your destination.
Sorted!

I was issued an emergency travel doc in Milan when I lost a passport , it was the same price as a ten year one but only lasted three days

Might be an idea to get all the paperwork sorted and checked out by the post office (£5 fee I think) before you go to the passport office
They get very pedantic about the photos (smile , glasses , even a shadow caused by ear lobes )
Took 3 goes in Germany and two in London before they was accepted
Take loads of pound coins as the photo machine won't give change , no one will be able to change a note and it is 6 quid a pop on the machine
Don't ask how I know this
